The following can be done in the analysis of materials, which in most cases are coupled with a mechanical or possible mechanical failure: 

• Determination of type of failure (i.e. metal fatigue, impact, etc.)
• Determination of cause of failure (poor maintenance, incorrect installation, etc.)
• Determination of material type and material properties
• Investigation of industrial accidents
• Analysis of filaments to determine if lights were on or off during accident
• Analysis of welds and materials to determine if a vehicle was built up from different vehicles
